The final week of the high school football season is always bittersweet.

Bitter for the teams whose season is over and the players must hang up their pads for the final time.

But it’s sweet for the teams that will play at least another week or longer as the UIL state football playoffs get underway.

In Jasper’s district, the No.1 ranked Carthage Bulldogs completed an undefeated regular season and have now won 82 games in a row. They are favored to win another in a long line of state championships and will play Gatesville in the first round of the playoffs.

Jasper will play the Connally Cadets in Whitehouse on Thursday for their first-round playoff game.

Rusk will play against Salado and Center will play China Springs, who defeated Jasper last year in the playoffs and lost the regional final to Carthage.

East Chambers, because of points, will be the No.1 seed out of District 10-3A Division I and will play Huntington.

Woodville will be the No. 2 seed and play Crockett.

Anahuac, the third seed, will play Coldsprings-Oakhurst, and Buna will play Diboll. East Chambers, Woodville and Anahuac all shared the district championship this year.

Newton easily defeated Corrigan-Camden to finish their regular season 8-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of West Orange-Stark. The Eagles will play Harleton in round one.

New Waverly finished second in the district and will play Hughes Springs.

Kountze finished third and will paly Elysian Fields.

Corrigan-Camden rounds out the district playoff teams, and they will play Waskom.

Evadale continues its playoff string as they have now been in the playoffs 18 straight years. They have a chance to avenge a 2-point loss from early in the season as they will play Cushing. Deweyville will go up against West Sabine. Hull-Daisetta will play Lovelady, and Burkeville will play Tenaha on Thursday here in Jasper.

It was another exciting football season that had its ups and downs for many area schools. Good luck to the seniors in your future endeavors.
