KOUNTZE — After splitting the first two meetings with Huffman-Hargave this season, the Bridge City volleyball team needed one more win over the Falcons to keep its season alive on Tuesday night.

Instead, Huffman handed Bridge City a four-set loss in the regional quarterfinals, eliminating the Cardinals from the Class 4A playoff bracket.

Bridge City dropped the first two sets to fall behind, but showed fight to win the third set, 25-23. However, Huffman didn’t let Bridge City hang around much longer, winning the fourth set, 25-12 to end any comeback attempt by the Cardinals.

The loss ends an impressive season for Bridge City under first-year coach Savanah DeLuna, who led the Cardinals to a perfect district record and the top seed out of 22-4A.

More Information

Regional quarterfinal scores:

Huffman-Hargrave def. Bridge City 3-1 (25-19, 25-15, 23-25, 25-12)

East Bernard def. Hardin 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23)

Neches def. Chester 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-19)

Huffman got to work right away, quickly jumping out to a 12-5 lead in the first set. DeLuna called for timeout before senior Harlee Tupper went on a nice serving streak to get the Cardinals back in the set. A few aces, combined with some big blocks at the net by Demi Carter helped get the set back tied at 13.

Things were still tied at 18, but the Falcons scored seven of the last eight points to win the first set, 25-19.

The second set started exactly like the first, with Bridge City falling behind 12-5, and DeLuna calling a timeout. However, the Cardinals didn’t keep things close this time, falling 25-15 and finding themselves in a devastating 2-0 hole overall.

Even so, Bridge City did well to work back into the game with its best effort in the third set. The Cardinals led through most of it, and used some strong spikes at the net to finally find room against Huffman’s front line.

The Falcons sent their last serve harmlessly into the net, and Bridge City forced another set with a 25-23 win in the third.

The Cardinals would get no closer as Huffman recovered with a 25-12 win in the fourth to seal its spot in the regional semifinals.

Bridge City’s season ends at 39-6 overall. The Cardinals graduate three seniors: Tupper, Caryss Carpenter and Lauren Richtler.
