The Lamar men’s basketball team defeated Wiley College 67-50 Tuesday night at the Montagne Center, and gave head coach Alvin Brooks a good start in his first year leading the Cardinals.

The Cardinals weren’t tested much during its season opener against an NAIA opponent.

Lamar’s backcourt accounted for most of the scoring. Jordyn Adams (15), Kasen Harrison (13) and Davion Buster (11) all reached double figures scoring as Brooks earned his first win at Lamar.

Harrison nearly recorded a triple double adding eight assists and nine rebounds to his stat line.

The Cardinals, who shot 50 percent from the field, never trailed in the victory. A 12-point halftime lead for Lamar ballooned up to 21 in the second half.

Lamar will face much stiffer competition this weekend when the Cardinals travel for a tough, two-game rod trip. They’ll face Miami of Ohio on Saturday, then play at Georgia Tech on Monday.

Lamar women lose in New Mexico

The Lamar women’s team lost 71-54 to the New Mexico Lobos on Tuesday night in Albuquerque.

Sabria Dean led the Cardinals in scoring (14), followed by Malay McQueen (13) and Akasha Davis (12).

Their next game is Friday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. against Howard Payne in the Montagne Center.
